Hello fellow travelers, thank you for joining me on this journey of self discovery and cheap vacations. This first blog is a little story about me before I became a budget traveler. My name is Somaya, I am 23 years old. I reside in NYC but don't plan on living here forever. My goal is to live internationally. To live a simple and quiet life enjoying good weather and good people. I've been budget traveling for the past 4 years to different places. Some places twice, others once. Each adventure is a little different then the other. But all magical and inexpensive!
My first time traveling internationally all by myself was when I was 19. It was my first time traveling without my family. Previously I would always travel with my mother and siblings. We would always travel to Algeria. As far as I remember the only places I've ever visited were Canada, Algeria, and London. Only reason I even made it into London was because our flight got canceled and they gave us a free Hotel and vouchers. So we stayed in London for two days. I was not a fan. It was gloomy and the weather did not make me feel good! Nonetheless I do plan on visiting London again but this time experiencing it in a different and new way. However Algeria was a more frequent vacation destination because that is were my family is from. We would visit every 2 years and have an amazing time every time we went. We would rent out beach houses for 2 weeks and stay there and explore. We would visit different cities. Frequent visits to the Sahara (my mothers family is from there). Overall it was always a good time. I visited Canada once when I was young. It was summer time thank the heavens. We had family there that we visited. However, I will be visiting Canada as an adult because I feel it has more to offer to adults then children. Canada I will be seeing you very soon!
I was always intrigued with warm vacation destinations so it only made sense my first vacation would be in Mexico. Lets remember I was 19 planning a vacation on a small budget. That budget was $400. Nothing more nothing less. I had one job and I wasn't making much. It wasn't even a full time job it was part time and I was in college. So my money was limited. But I was determined on finally going on a vacation that was in my budget.
This was the beginning of my budget traveling adventures. My goal was to never spend more then $500 on any trip I go to. I was young, broke and determined. Like I stated previously my first international trip didn't cost me more then $400. Including flight, hotel, activities and food.
The purpose of this blog is to help those who are like me and don't want to spend an arm and a leg for a vacation and a good time. IT IS POSSIBLE and IT IS DOABLE. Stay tuned for my next blog on how I achieved what most think is a myth.
